Skin needling is generally not considered painful. We apply a topical numbing cream prior to treatment for 20 minutes, which significantly reduces sensation. Most patients describe it as a mild scratching or vibrating feeling — something you're aware of, but rarely uncomfortable. The SkinPen's precision also allows your clinician to adjust depth in real time.

4–6 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart is generally recommended — though each person is different and your treatment plan will be tailored to your specific goals and skin concerns. Your clinician will give you an honest, realistic recommendation at your first appointment, not a one-size-fits-all answer.

Immediately following treatment you may experience a tight, tingling sensation, mild swelling and redness — similar to mild sunburn. This typically settles within 24–48 hours. Some clients experience minor peeling around the mouth region over 5–7 days. During this time, avoid sun exposure, makeup, AHAs, BHAs, retinols and physical exfoliation. We'll give you clear written aftercare instructions at your appointment.

Skin needling works by triggering your body's own collagen response — which takes time. You'll notice an initial glow from increased circulation in the days following treatment, but the real results develop gradually over 4–8 weeks as new collagen matures beneath the surface. Yes — one of the key advantages of SkinPen is that it is suitable for most skin types and tones, including deeper skin tones that can be at higher risk with certain laser treatments. However, individuals with active acne, eczema or rosacea may be advised to wait. Your clinician will assess your skin at your consultation to confirm suitability and discuss any contraindications.

Before your appointment, avoid sun exposure and discontinue use of exfoliating skincare (AHAs, BHAs, retinols) for a few days prior. Keep your skin hydrated and avoid blood-thinning supplements such as fish oil for 3 days beforehand. Do not cease any prescribed medications — speak to your clinician if you're unsure. Your treating therapist will discuss your full medical history at the consultation.
