Skin Needling: What It Actually Does and Why Results Take Time

You've probably heard about skin needling. Maybe a friend swears by it, or you've seen it mentioned online and wondered whether it's worth the hype. At Rejuved on the Central Coast, skin needling is one of our most requested treatments — and for good reason. But there's also a lot of misinformation out there about what it does, how it works and what realistic results actually look like.

So let's talk about it honestly.

What is Skin Needling?

Skin needling — also known as collagen induction therapy — is a minimally invasive skin treatment that uses a device fitted with fine, sterile needles to create thousands of microscopic channels in the surface of the skin. These tiny, controlled micro-injuries trigger the skin's natural wound-healing response, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin — the two proteins responsible for keeping skin firm, smooth and resilient.

At Rejuved, we use the SkinPen — a medical-grade skin needling device that allows our team of dermal therapists, dermal clinicians and Registered Nurses to precisely control the depth of treatment depending on your skin concerns and the area being treated. Not all needling devices are created equal, and the quality of the device matters enormously for both safety and results.

What Does Skin Needling Actually Treat?

Skin needling is one of the most versatile skin treatments available because it works by stimulating your skin from within rather than relying on topical products alone. It can be beneficial for a wide range of concerns, including:

Fine lines and surface texture As we age, collagen production naturally slows. Skin needling helps to reactivate this process, improving the appearance of fine lines and giving the skin a smoother, more refined texture over time.

Acne scarring One of the areas where skin needling truly shines. By breaking down old scar tissue and encouraging new collagen to form in its place, a course of skin needling treatments can significantly improve the appearance of rolling and boxcar acne scars.

Enlarged pores Needling stimulates skin remodelling around the pore, which over a course of treatments can reduce their appearance and give the skin a more even, refined look.

Skin tone and dullness The increase in cellular turnover that follows needling gives the skin a brighter, more luminous quality — something our patients often notice even before the collagen-building benefits fully set in.

Stretch marks and skin laxity Skin needling can also be used on the body to address stretch marks and areas of skin laxity, with results improving gradually over a series of treatments.

Skin Needling vs Other Treatments — How Does It Compare?

Skin needling sits in a really useful middle ground in the world of skin treatments. It's more targeted and clinically effective than most topical skincare alone, but less invasive and more accessible than laser resurfacing.

At Rejuved, we often recommend skin needling as part of a broader skin treatment plan. Depending on your concerns, it may be combined with Laser Genesis for additional texture and tone work, or preceded by a professional peel to optimise skin health before needling begins. Our clinical team work collaboratively to ensure your treatment plan makes sense for your skin as a whole — not just one isolated concern.

What Happens During a Skin Needling Treatment at Rejuved?

When you come in for skin needling at our Bateau Bay clinic, we begin with a thorough skin consultation to understand your concerns, assess your skin health and determine the most appropriate treatment depth and protocol for you.

The treatment itself typically takes around 30 to 45 minutes depending on the areas being treated.

During the treatment, the SkinPen device is passed over the skin in a controlled, methodical pattern. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild scratching or vibrating feeling — rarely painful, but something you're aware of. After treatment, your skin will appear red and feel warm, similar to mild sunburn. This is completely normal and settles within 24 to 48 hours for most people.

We also offer a professional peel add-on to your skin needling appointment, which can further enhance your results by supporting cellular renewal in the days following treatment. Your treating therapist will discuss whether this is appropriate for your skin at your consultation.

Why Do Results Take Time — and How Many Treatments Do You Need?

This is one of the most important things to understand about skin needling, and we'd rather be upfront with you than have you come in expecting an overnight transformation.

Skin needling works by triggering your body's own healing process. Collagen takes time to build. The initial glow you'll notice in the days after treatment is largely due to increased circulation and mild swelling — the real results develop over weeks and months as new collagen matures and remodels beneath the surface.

Most patients begin to notice meaningful improvement after their second or third treatment. For optimal results, we typically recommend a course of three to six sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. After that, maintenance treatments every three to six months help to preserve and build on your results.

Patience is genuinely part of the process — and the patients who commit to a full course consistently see the most significant, lasting change.

Is Skin Needling Right for You?

Skin needling is suitable for most skin types and tones, including deeper skin tones that may not be appropriate candidates for certain laser treatments. It's a treatment that genuinely works across a wide range of concerns and ages — from younger patients managing acne scarring to patients in their 40s and 50s looking to address the early signs of skin ageing.

There are some contraindications — including active acne, certain skin conditions and some medications — which is why we always begin with a thorough skin consultation before recommending any treatment.

If you're based on the Central Coast and curious about whether skin needling is right for you, we'd love to chat. Our team at Rejuved in Bateau Bay takes the time to understand your skin, your lifestyle and your goals before recommending anything — because the right treatment plan is always the one that's built around you.
